Engaging

Ah, engagement portraits. These are always fun because each couple's joint personality eventually comes through. I don't really have any skill at posing people, so I just point the camera, make some jokes, serve some beer, and let them go. Usually works out. Although, with Leslie and Bryan, there were an inordinate amount of hilarious, but utterly unusable out-takes. Will get those up soon.

So Leslie and Bryan were in town

Visiting in tandem with Clare. Very sophisticated shots from the engagement-portrait shoot forthcoming, too.

Thanksgiving at my place

I feel ya, dude

Wow, what a weekend. The East Austin Studio Tour was a smash success, and I got a Wii. I'm exhausted. Thanksgiving can't get here soon enough.

Hi! I'm "Wal-Mart Distribution Center." You might remember me from such blogs as...

walmart distribution center, originally uploaded by Mr. Wright.

It's been new-job madness down here in Austin. Quit my old copy editing job at Enspire. Started working with Louis at the grocery store and deli where he's a night manager. Shot a wedding in S.A. Overhauled my portfolio. Picked up freelance work with a studio in town. Fantasy basketball season just started. Have been meeting with financial planners for the first time in my life. Am in the process of applying for a job blogging with the Texas Observer. And the first East Austin Studio Tour for Lion, Tiger, Bear is this weekend.

Poor Austinist probably thinks I've gone native and thrown myself full fledge into print journalism or stock photography, it's been so long since I posted there. That's what you get when you got an all-volunteer staff.

Anyways, the above image still leads off my portfolio. You can see the rest of the updated, slim-downed showcase here. For the first time, I must say, this collection has a little something going for it, a little cohesiveness, instead of the slapdash feel of old.

At least he had his own balloons

the lonely blogger, originally uploaded by Mr. Wright.

This last week has been absolutely crazy. Then I log on to Flickr and randomly see this. Seemed fitting. On election day alone, for example, I found myself doing interviews in the parking lot of an arbitrary church in quiet Taylor, Texas, and within about nine hours was within 10 feet of Rick Perry. I'll explain it all in more detail soon. For now: food, beer, rest.

Been that kind of day

Results of errands run all day... HEB mucked up some of my (new) portfolio prints. Apple said my busted laptop would've qualified for the "extended service agreement" — definitely not a "recall" — if I'd brought it in a year and a half ago. Amanda thinks she lost a ring she bought in Italy. The people I'm preparing the portfolio for still have not gotten back to me. And then I woke up our neighbors while cleaning the house just before midnight. Even got the "I'm not trying to be an asshole or anything" line. Wonderful.

One last shot from DeafACT

Loved the geometry in this setup. Another cool shot looking this direction is here.

Tiii-iiime is on my side

apprehension, originally uploaded by Mr. Wright.

Amanda volunteered recently to help out with a thing called Deaf Act. It's a theater program for deaf kids around middle school age, maybe a bit younger. Tonight they debuted "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" at the Texas Union theater. The folks in charge of the production had asked for as many volunteer photogs as they could get. They got at least four of us tonight. I think that's almost as many as were at Barack Obama last weekend.

Earlier in the day, when Amanda asked me to shoot, I immediately went through the excuse rolodex, with an early season Spurs-Cavs immediately jumping to mind. But I went of course and, wouldn't you know it, ended up getting some great stuff. The picture above, though, gets at something I wish I could consistently capture: a sense of timelessness. Reid was the first to apply that term to one of my photos, and I think it pins down the special capacity of photography to record something that is simultaneously universal and not generic. Like a good essay, now that I think about it.
